Bosses are not perfect; that’s not the problem. The problem is when a boss decides to use his employees to fix a problem in his personal life. Look, I don’t judge. I really don’t, but using his subordinates to support a bad habit was a bridge too far.
It started out betting on typical things like sports and races. The Boss, which I must use to protect the innocent, had a cute little obsession with international gift baskets. So, on occasion, he would pay up when I bet and won. I always chose gift baskets that ship internationally. I enjoyed those goodies; I miss those goodies.
The betting became bizarre, and the office joke. It isn’t kind to make fun of someone with an addiction. Still, we constantly made The Boss aware that betting on whether the copy machine would break down was ridiculous. And, to ask for his cash winnings was even more outside of the realm of sanity. When the international gift delivery stopped, we knew he was likely in trouble.
We started ignoring him. We thought if he refused to listen, for sure, he would notice we didn’t react when he wanted to bet how many pens were in the drawer or the number of paper clips in the jar. But, it became more desperate every day.
What happened next is one of those things you see in a Bad Boss movie. Even now, my friends and family don’t believe me. But it happened, even though I have no receipts to show you. You will just have to take my word for it.
It was a random Tuesday. The Boss had been acting erratically on Monday. He flew out of the office early, which meant the rest of us did, too. But that is beyond the point!
The Boss announced at the morning meeting that there would be a raffle. Supposedly, it was to boost morale, and we could possibly win one of his incredible gifts that ship internationally.
WE thought that he was returning to his fun-loving self that didn’t bet on how many times Suzy would go on break or what Timothy would eat for lunch. Turns out, international gifts were not on the menu.
But, before everything went to hell in a handbasket, we all honestly didn’t give it a lot of thought. The Boss always had ideas that were either lame or ridiculous. We really wanted him to get better, even though the office fodder would go away, or we would have to focus on Timothy’s lunch habits. We all just spent that Tuesday Googling international gift delivery UK because we honestly thought one of us would get to pick one out. International gifts online were just a ruse.
Given how much The Boss was charging for his hypothetical international gift delivery Australia edition, we thought he should throw in some of the best gifts in Europe, too. I mean, a $50 ticket was out there, but we thought, what the hell. If The Boss chose to send the gifts online same day delivery, it would run about that much.
We should have asked more questions. I know that now. But, we just wanted to get our work done before the weekend. Every day The Boss was at our desk asking if we wanted to buy one, or another one, or another one, and you get the idea.
Sure, we figured he needed a little cash, but we didn’t see what was right in front of our eyes. The Boss’ problem was becoming ours, and it would be crazier than the Horrible Bosses movie. And, HR’s nightmares just grew tenfold. The fact it all unfolded in a week didn’t give us time to really check in with reality, and Lord knows, the Boss sure didn’t live in it with the rest of us.
Spoiler, we did not even have the option of an international gift basket delivery. The things The Boss brought in Thursday made us all go slack-jawed. We were baffled.
First, The Boss brought the raffle “prizes” in one of those big black trash bags. You know the ones that could carry a dead body, and you can buy in bulk at Costco. We didn’t even have to see what was inside to know we obviously ignored red flags, and it might have cost most of us big money. We sure didn’t need all of those neato international gift ideas we Googled.
Secondly, the things that were in the bag were absolutely mind-boggling. So much so, we thought it was a colossal joke. The first thing The Boss pulled from his oversized trash bag was an ashtray. No, really, not a cool one that people decorate with. This was an 80’s chunky glass ashtray that likely once was surrounded by smokers from the Mad Men era.
The Boss had a look of enjoyment on his face while we were still convinced it was a prank. The garage store stock preview kept going - a very used set of guitar picks, a used Zippo from apparently 1999, two re-gifted and sparse international food gift baskets from who knows when, and the grand prize was a broken record player.
I’ve learned over the years that sometimes it’s best to just let stuff go. Horrible Bosses moments happened so often that it became second nature. This was no different. The rest of the office started the day in frustration and confusion, and by lunch, I was not going to be able to extinguish the fire The Boss built.
The last thing I was thinking about was a gift basket store. It had escalated beyond amusement. Sometime after, The Boss came in after his far-too-long lunch break and was met with a barrage of questions. The best international gift delivery was no longer on the menu, but questions of righteous indignation were.
Why did you do this? What is going on? Why are you involving us in whatever is going on? What do you expect us to do with all of this? - These were all questions that my coworkers asked our guilty-looking supervisor. The saddest part of it all was that he just stood there. He had nothing for us or nothing he cared to share with us at that moment.
While all of this was going on, I stayed at my desk, on my computer, and Googled Christmas gifts internationally delivery because the holidays were around the corner. I hate drama. This day was no different, except it was. What if we had to call HR? What a nightmare.
So, you might see where this is going, or you might not. But, either way, you’ve likely underestimated the severity. The last couple of years, the office took his insane office gambling habit in stride and participated because why not? The gift baskets Europe reviews were always a good read, leading up to one of us picking out a prize. Even if he rarely paid up the way he promised. The truth is nine times out of ten, we got a gift basket overseas coupon instead.
We all left the office that day with tons of questions lingering and left unanswered. The following day we all arrived around the same time. We didn’t see The Boss anywhere. But, a top-notch gift basket overseas review was on all of our desks with IOUs written across them. Say what? We spent anywhere from $50 to $100 on raffle tickets. At least I wanted the damned junk he advertised. The Zippo was worth a couple bucks on eBay.
It was the breaking point to the dam of whatever the hell this was. The Boss found himself in a corner, and he began to spill the beans. He was nearly $20,000 in debt and thought he could fundraise around the office as a fun distraction. The Boss was telling a half-truth, but at least we knew the trouble he was in, now. I remained silent, as I had since the beginning. But, I knew a little about what he was going through.
The Boss finally broke down and apologized. He spent that entire Friday promising he would have our money by Monday. I believed him. I finally spoke up while he was snotting and sobbing, and I knew it was genuine. See, I had been through something like that before. My addiction wasn’t gambling. I won’t disclose in this story what it was, but without my friends, I wouldn’t be here.
I let him know that he had until Monday to try and make it right, or everyone was going to pay the Hellish HR office a visit. And he knew none of us wanted to deal with them. I made it clear there was a second stipulation - he had to start going to Gambler’s Anonymous once a week. I took a show of hands on who would go with him to hold him accountable, and we decided to take turns.
Monday rolled around, and an international gift delivery USA was waiting along with the money he owed. The Boss had ordered gifts to USA same delivery so that we knew he thought about it all and wanted to make the last couple of years right, not just last week.
The Boss never bet one Timothy’s lunch again, and he remembers to send birthday gifts to USA from around the world for each of us. He is no longer embarrassed or isolated. You can’t imagine how much work gets done now. I’m tired.
