So, I work in this sales department. Basically, if we don't hit our quota, we are in big trouble. Of course, our boss is responsible for making sure we hit that quota, and it can be very frustrating when we do not. After all, if we don't hit the quota, our boss is likely to take it out on us. I wouldn't say it is a friendly workplace environment, but what can you do, you know? It's not like I can just leave and find a new job! Is it toxic? I'm not really sure what that means, but I do know that last quarter, we were on track to miss our target again. It was only a few days before the end of the quarter, and we were not in a good spot.
We were all working hard. Even though some of our senior staff members had given us unique employee appreciation gifts and corporate gifts for employees, those gifts for international employees were not reflective of what our boss felt. Given how we knew our boss felt, those employee gifts were definitely not from him! He was very frustrated that we weren't doing well, and he said that he would do anything in his power to get us back on track.
Basically, there are two ways to motivate people. Some of our senior staff members were trying to encourage us to do better. They were trying to entice us with some amazing reward. Our boss tries to do the same thing through fear. He would threaten us, cajole us, and force us to work harder. Look, there comes a time when no matter how hard we work, people simply aren't going to buy it! If it isn't a great product, there isn't much point in us selling it!
When we found out we were on track to miss our targets again, everyone was very nervous. Our boss was beside himself. For the third quarter in a row, he was on the hot seat. Even though people have been giving out remote employee appreciation gifts and personalized employee appreciation gifts, our boss felt like that was not appropriate, given that we were not doing well. He asked people to stop giving out gifts for employees appreciation, as he was definitely someone who motivated more with the stick than the carrot.
Even though there are plenty of employee appreciation gifts under $10, we weren't exactly on track to hit our targets. Everyone was very concerned that we would be in trouble. After all, when you get to the end of the quarter, our boss starts to get in a bad mood if we are not on track. Of course, we were very far off base this quarter as well. Our boss was incredibly nervous about what might happen if we didn't perform well. He was even scared they might replace him. He said that he wouldn't be the only one to go down if we were missing our targets, which sounded like a threat.
Our boss was very determined that there was no way we would fall short. We were being forced to sell on the street. There were plenty of items that we were trying to push. This included unique high-end corporate gifts, luxury corporate gifts, and even branded corporate gifts. Some of these unique corporate gifts and high end corporate gifts were very expensive, but perhaps that was the reason why a lot of people weren't buying them. Even though they look pretty nice to us, they aren't right for everyone. Eventually, there comes a point when you need to ask yourself what you're doing. Why are you selling these items? Are they really all that awesome?
Of course, our boss didn't care. All he knew was that he might end up taking the fall if we did not perform well by the end of the quarter. Therefore, we were supposed to do everything we could to try to sell as many products as possible. Even if that meant that we were stepping outside of our scope and job descriptions, we were still expected to do that. So, we were good employees and did as we were told.
Now, I have been around for a long time, but I am not exactly one of the oldest people there. Fortunately, I wasn't one of the new people either. The new people were actually assigned blocks throughout the city. We had a list of small gift ideas for employees, and we thought about giving inexpensive motivational gifts for employees to some of the new people who had to leave the office and go to the street. That's right, we were looking at gift ideas for employees on a budget because some of our co-workers were forced to go to the street to try and sell their items!
Even though there are plenty of employee appreciation gifts under $20, we didn't feel like that was enough for the people who had to hit the street. This is not why we went to school, and this is not why we signed up for this job. We certainly did not ask to be sent out to the street to sell to people we didn't know. That isn't what we do well, and that certainly isn't a part of our job description. At the same time, our boss was determined that he was not going to miss his target again, no matter what.
Ultimately, some people on the street start to have success. They actually found people to buy the ridiculous items we were selling. Because some people are doing well, some people started to get expensive employee appreciation gifts and personalized employee Christmas gifts. There were even staff appreciation gifts during COVID given out because of how well we were doing. At the same time, some of the numbers simply were not adding up. People were going out with a certain number of items and coming back with fewer. If they sell 10 items, they should have a certain amount of money.
Even though we were doing well, it wasn't exactly a time to start giving out personalized gifts for employees. There were a lot of questions going around, and people were having a hard time figuring out why the numbers weren’t quite adding up. People can do the math, and it was obvious that there was some money missing. Some people are very concerned, and our boss was very worried that he had created a situation that he could not get out of.
Amidst all of the unique gifts for employees, some people finally admitted to skimming money off the top. Of course, that is a major foul, and the people who admitted to stealing from the company ended up getting fired. Of course, that didn't exactly reflect well on our boss. There is a reason why we are not sent out on the street on a regular basis. It is simply not a good idea for people to be handling cash as they sell gifts to other people.
Given the luxury corporate gifts UK and meaningful gifts for employees, our staff members knew that we had quite a bit of power. Our boss threatened to punish the people who were skimming off the top, but we threatened to report him to corporate. After all, we shouldn't have been out on the street trying to sell expensive gifts for employees. The situation spirals out of control, and if our workplace wasn't toxic before, it was certainly toxic then. A lot of people were very concerned. We didn't know what we were going to do. Our boss was losing control, and many of our staff members appear to be revolting against our bosses. Eventually, it came to a head.
Of course, after that incident, nobody wanted to go back out there. We were all very tired, frustrated, and upset at the working environment we were living in. Some people even threatened to quit. Of course, it should come as no surprise that we missed our target for the third quarter in a row. Our boss ultimately ends up taking the fall, and we have a new boss now.
Our new boss is much better, and he encourages us to give each other staff appreciation gifts under $5 as a way to create a positive work environment. Even though there is a list of $200 gift ideas for employees, not many of them are on the list of Christmas gifts for employees 2021. It is the thought that counts, and because we have been missing our targets, we don't exactly have a lot of money to spend. There are plenty of Christmas gifts for international employees available as well, and it is our hope that our new boss finds a way to treat us better.
