Every workplace has a Frank, and if you're lucky, you have two; if you're unlucky, you have three. We had just our one Frank. Frank was kind of like an uncle or your dad's best friend, always brought one broken fishing rod on a fishing trip and two coolers full of beer. More hair in his ears than on his head and a red face, uncertain age looked a bit like Santa if St Nic had had a more challenging life. We were pretty grateful to Frank because he accidentally made us a bunch of sales. I'm not sure Uncle Frank would have known how to do it deliberately by working. In terms of work, his most significant contribution was stopping his office chair from getting stolen in the afternoons by napping in it.
No Frank had gotten into the habit of sharing his unfortunate sense of humor at Xmas or staff birthday parties or New Years'. By buying painful gifts for his colleagues. Underwear for female staff and sometimes some of the better-looking male co-workers. Joke T-shirts with rude words led to many HR meetings, which Frank listened to ernetly for the first five minutes before falling asleep and snoring noisily. Nobody wanted to fire Frank; that would be like making Santa Clause shave his beard even if Santa was far, far better at making people happy. You don't want to know what he sent as gifts for remote workers, but it made them more remote!
No, Frank decided to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by sending tequila bottles to all of our customers. Including several religious institutions that didn't permit alcohol drinking, we switched to an online gift-giving company for everything. Customer, colleagues, some of us even used it for own family, thoughtful inexpensive gifts for remote workers. Because for a big corporation, these guys had a remarkably personal touch, and our sales increased, as did our positive reviews. This was a couple of years ago before the pandemic, so we were in great shape for when that landed on us. Way to go, Frank! Thanks! Don't high five. He's sleeping and will fall out of his chair. You wouldn't think that was the guy who came up with virtual gifts for remote employees
When we got back to the office at the end of the pandemic, we noticed that something was missing; it was Frank. Gone was his cheery red face framed by white, bushy ear hair, the gentle sound of his afternoon snoring. The company had been conscientious about making the workplace safe and inviting to return to, but no Frank. We even got thank you gifts for employees
After Jane came into the office and announced that Frank wasn't returning, he had decided to take early retirement. Only one person said,
"From doing what exactly?"
I'm ashamed to admit that I laughed.
Had Frank found that working remotely, he could finally do his job conscientiously and efficiently? Not.
Being back together and sharing a laugh was the best virtual gifts for employees, in that I'd missed my colleagues so much.
The thing is, Frank would make an evil supervillain, or instead, he'd make a fantastic James Bond supervillain because he couldn't be secret and always had to discuss his master plan with everybody. In this case, using the workplace remote server for all communication and replying to everyone but blind copying it, he didn't even realize he was doing it. Had he enjoyed his gifts for employees working from home that much?
Frank was planning to pretend to retire; he would carry on working as much as he ever did remotely from home for a different department. But why was he doing this? What could Frank's cunning final plan be? We were about to find out as we sat on our break, going through his messages and sipping coffee.
Frank had been badgering Tom in personnel if it was ok to ask people to contribute to gifts directly for him, rather than using our virtual system. We were then asking Trisha if he could ask staff for a" whip-round" to send him the money directly. He was then asking me in legal if it was immoral to ask for the receipts for any gifts. The idea being I assumed once he got his retirement gifts, take them all to Target or Macy's, hand them over and get his money and take them to Vega. Why Vegas? How did we know Vegas? I'd head of employee appreciation gifts during covid, but I don't think anybody was that appreciated!
Jennifer, who ran the transport desk, was included in an email on could the company send him there? As well as for several lurid holiday destinations in Las Vegas, casinos, shows, and casinos with the most generous free drink comps. I don't think anybody had considered these as gift ideas for employees during covid
It didn't take a genius to realize that Frank was planning to get as expensive a gift as possible from us, get his money back at the store, then go and blow it on the tables. It's a good thing we liked Frank so much because this was very devious, who would have that he had it in him! The fun of tracking him down was like having some unsuspected employee appreciation gifts during covid-19 as it was like solving a Nancy Drew mystery.
How Frank persuaded HR to let him retire and carry on working from home was a work of genius. Frank wrote an email, of course, sent to everyone, so we got to see his plotting. Saying that he had taken to working from home as quickly as working in the office, he felt he was ideally suited for his new retirement mixed with work role. This was, of course true, it wasn't like Frank could do any less work than he was doing. And as he wasn't sleeping in the office, he wasn't stopping anybody else from working. However, some of us found the soft sound of him snoring in the afternoons to be surprisingly restful. Frank had even managed to save time he'd been wasting getting dressed for work, as some of us found out at the few Zoom meetings he had attended, where his bathrobe would fall open. His chest hairs were work from home gifts for employees, but fortunately, not customers. Fortunately, at some point, he stopped turning his camera on, then stopped turning up; nobody minded; we just liked knowing he was out there. work from home gifts had many advantages; for Frank, it was sleeping and avoiding wearing pants.
Frank was our precious gift, and we were glad he would keep on working with us, but how could we reward him without him cashing in all our goodwill? We wanted him amongst us, so quarantine work from home gifts wasn’t the right thing.
Our office had been getting ready to reopen, and congratulations were due to Carole in HR for her hard, hard work. It’s easy to think of this in terms of plastic screens around desks, distance markers on the carpet to keep us apart. But Carole went above and beyond what was expected of her. We had a mood room with soft music and art on the walls. No more than two staff at a time could sit there and think about their day and plan their next moves. We had felt pods with VR helmets where you could sit and be anywhere. Thought due to Covid, these particular units needed to be cleaned more often than anything else. And as such were more of a nuisance than anything else. But Carole had kept our spirits up, even with her meaningful gifts for employees, we all remembered how thoughtful her Christmas gifts for employees during Covid were.
We were all agreed on one thing, though; Frank would have loved all of them if he wasn’t retiring.
They would have been the perfect spot for him to have a quick nap, and as for the hot yoga room, he could dry his socks there. Employees bring many gifts. One of Frank’s inexpensive motivational gifts for employees was wet socks.
We were following Franks’s plans to go to Vegas on holiday, then sneakily and retire with great interest. It was like a soap opera and brought us together as a team, far more than Hot Yoga or VR pods. Carole was at first a little upset by this, then remembered how it was her thoughtful gift that had helped bring us together while we were on lockdown. Then somebody else pointed out that she’d only had to start doing that because Frank kept giving inappropriate gifts. Then we laughed at the truckload of mother’s day cards he’d once sent to a Nunnery. These were not as good as our gifts for employees during covid Carole said we should get Frank some lovely luggage for his trip and maybe a sun hat and some branded suntan lotion. Nothing as tasteful as the staff appreciation gifts during covid she was able to arrange. Because he was going to Vegas, and it was a reward. I must admit I was a little jealous. Was Carole sneaking off for a shotgun, Elvis's wedding with Frank? She was half his age, a quarter his weight, and much less hairy. Knowing how that story ended would be the Christmas gift for staff during covid if it came back that brought us all together as a team.
It turns out that the company was inviting Frank to go and scout out the new office in Las Vegas; as we made underfloor heating, I didn’t think there would be much work involved. Which would suit Frank down to the ground; somehow, we all suspected Frank wouldn’t be spending that couple of weeks in a bathrobe slumming it in his bathrobe. Perhaps the company should get him a monographed bathrobe; maybe we should all get one? As creative employee gifts? That would be perfect gifts for employees appreciation if we all wore them to work one day. More than likely, he’d be hitting the tables and the adult beverages. But if Frank was happy, we were glad he was our lucky mascot. His plan to retire and work from home part-time was also still on course. We hoped that Carole's thoughtful gifts would ensure that he kept remembering us and popped into keeping an eye on us. As nobody was using the Hot Yoga room, there'd even be a warm spot for him to sleep in. Kind of like a cat, except he didn’t catch mice. Our warm feelings towards Frank were fun recognition gifts for employees that we all shared. Did Carole join Frank in Vegas? That’s a story for another day.
