Our office manager noticed it first, when she was going into the office to send gifts for employees appreciation to our clients. She was going in once a week during lockdown just to keep an eye on things. She started telling us stories about how she was seeing animals around the office. First it was an adorable bunny by the front door - a rather bold bunny, as she described it. Even as she walked up to the front door and used her key card to get in, the bunny sat by the key card machine and watched her with something that looked like suspicion in its eyes. The rabbit itself was very young, and had probably been born during the pandemic. It had been born in a world with empty buildings, empty streets, empty parks and beaches, etc. As the office manager described it, it was insanely cute - not yet an adult - but it had no natural fear of people. Our office manager went back into the office later in the week to get information about corporate gifting companies, and while she was there, she said she looked out her desk window to see a deer looking in at her through the window. Our office manager was typing an email to all of us about gifting services, meanwhile, the deer was staring at her. Our office manager found it unsettling. At that time, our office manager was the only one going into the office regularly. She started reporting to us with lots of stories about animals - outside and inside the building. That’s right! She was seeing animals inside the building. I’ll never forget the day she sent me a picture from the office kitchen. The refrigerator door was open and a squirrel was eating straight out of the fridge!
So, our office manager (her name is Gale, by the way) did what any self-respecting office manager would do: she put up wildlife cams so everyone could watch the action on live stream. She was both perplexed and delighted when she saw a video clip one day of a stray dog walking up to the unlocked back door by the loading dock, and letting itself in. We thought that no one knew about that unlocked door except for the employees who like to use it as a means of escape on nice afternoons, but apparently the local wildlife are all clued in. Pretty soon, Gale was sending us videos of all the wildlife you can imagine: birds, deer, rabbits, even wild turkeys showed up. Gale was going into the office regularly to manage and administer the automated gift giving service. While she was there sending meaningful gifts for employees, she made friends with the animals. There were two animals she particularly loved: a raccoon named Roger, and a mouse that sits near her keyboard, named Squeaky. Apparently, Squeaky kept her company while she filled orders for remote employee appreciation gifts. I’ve seen pictures of Squeaky and she’s SO cute. Gale made her a little scarf to wear. But Gale also told me some disturbing information about Squeaky, Roger, and the rest of the gang. There’s a dark side.
They had come for the food. And the shelter. They like what we have, and they consider it their own. Case in point: Gale came in one day to send out the corporate gift email template, and there was a nest of black birds (one parent and a nest full of babies) sitting on her chair. When she tried to move the nest, the adult bird flew at her making a terrible cawing noise. Then, the bird’s talons got caught in her hair! Gale had to go work at a different desk to send her brand collaboration email template. She usually enjoyed spending time with the animals in the office, but the incident with the black birds left her shaken. She said that she had to leave the office early and was not able to send a welcome email template new employee. Gale kept us all up to date on the different happenings around the office with the animals. We all enjoyed hearing about it - and thought it was disappointing that the animals would obviously be leaving when we all arrived in the office. Boy, were we wrong.
We showed up on that first day, and expected there would be a massive exodus of animals - the birds, the squirrels, the bunnies, the raccoons etc - all of them would come running out of the building and off the property. I actually was poised to take pictures on the edge of the property when I arrived that morning. I waited for the first group of employees to go in, and waited, watched - and nothing happened. Here’s why: all the animals stayed. We now share our office with a range of animals. You wouldn’t believe how weird it is. My cubicle is occupied by a family of badgers - which isn’t much fun because badgers, it turns out, aren’t nice. It could be worse - the cubicle right next to mine is occupied by the biggest rats you ever saw. Every day, I go into the office to work on fulfilling orders of gift baskets that ship internationally, and I’m never quite sure if the badger family is going to let me have my own chair or not. I’m doing my best to ship the best international gift delivery I can, but I’m kind of terrified they’re going to bite me. The squirrels have the run of the courtyard--there's no eating outside anymore without losing half your lunch. The birds are everywhere, and someone gets pooped on almost every day. It’s hard to come up with more international gift ideas under these circumstances.
Life with the animals is becoming seriously problematic. I’ll be at work, trying to send a free gift email template to some client, and all of the sudden, a bird will land on my head. Caw in my face. Like the other day: I’m fulfilling an order for inexpensive motivational gifts for employees when suddenly I’ll realize there’s a mouse on my keyboard, eating my food, and it won’t leave. I try to shoo it away, and it waves its arms at me, like it’s trying to shoo me away! So, then I try to take back my food, and suddenly three more mice pop up out of nowhere (like, from behind my monitor maybe?) and they gang up on me! This is now becoming common place. It happens all the time. It’s not just me having this problem - it’s everyone. Everyone at the office. At least once a week there's a major panic attack over a snake or frog. The other day, my best office friend was sitting at the table in the kitchen eating some soup for her lunch, when she noticed a tarantula and a mouse arguing over the same piece of leftover bread that had fallen on the floor. She couldn’t even finish her soup; she was too distracted by the argument taking place in front of her. She was late sending her gift voucher email because of it. People are afraid to walk outside alone--one guy already quit.
The raccoons are the ones to really watch out for. They look cute, but they mean business. That raccoon that Gale named Roger went from being an office favorite to being an office nemesis - and it happened really fast. Roger is a ringleader for the other raccoons. He walks into the office with three or four of his cronies behind him. I’ll be working on some online gift giving project, and see Roger romping past, arm fulls of office food. His buddies will also be collecting food as well. Some of the employees have started bringing food to appease Roger and his friends. Literally, they’re giving the raccoons offerings. They’ll stop their work of sending staff appreciation gifts during covid, and hand Roger something that he really likes. The more Roger likes whatever they’ve given him, the longer Roger will leave them alone. It’s nuts. I’m having a hard time getting my international gift delivery UK orders fulfilled. The other day, Roger and his friends came by my cubicle, and I decided not to give Roger any offerings. I wanted to see what would happen. I won’t get into great detail about how Roger reacted, but let’s just say, I am never going to use that purse. Ever again.
If we don't do something soon, we might have to go back to working from home forever. I can’t keep fulfilling gift email template orders with my life being controlled by animals in this way. That Roger creep is a menace, and he needs to go. I started organizing a resistance effort. We’ve got a plan for taking back control of our workspace. Lately, instead of making inexpensive motivational gifts for employees uk, I spend my days pouring over blue prints of the office, and discussing with my coworkers ways that we drive the animals out of the office. One of these days, I’m going to start working on gift card email template html again, but until that day happens, I’m stuck here with an office full of animals. And I’ve got ideas for getting rid of them. Using a series of traps, some theater smoke, a visit from the pest control guy and some very desirable food to lure the animals out of the office, I’m going to get these animals out of here.
