Hal was a New Yorker’s New Yorker. Not into trends. No yoga, no oat milk, and definitely no “mindful snacking.” Hal ate chips—loud, crunchy, kettle-cooked chips with real flavor. Bold tastes, strong coffee, and Mets radio in the background.

Seltzer had to be sharp, cold, and preferably in a bottle that might explode if looked at the wrong way. Flavor? Optional. Bubbles? Mandatory. The kind that makes eyes water. “If it doesn’t fight back, it’s just water,” he’d say.

Hal didn’t invent the chip, but it was made better—kettle-cooked, loud as a subway at rush hour, and perfectly paired with a neighborhood deli sandwich.
